How should you judge probiotics immune claims?
Probiotics immune claims should be judged strain by strain, because a result for one strain says little about another. A good label names the genus, species and strain, and gives a count in CFU. Reviralis Complete lists no probiotic among its 40 names, so nothing here applies to its capsules.

Why does the strain matter for probiotic claims?
A probiotic is a specific living strain, and a trial result belongs to that strain, at that dose, in that group of people.
Think of dogs: a trial on one breed does not tell you how another behaves. A label that says only "probiotic blend" or "supports immunity" gives you nothing to check. A useful label names the full strain, such as a genus, species and a strain code.
The Reviralis Supplement Facts lists 22 vitamin and mineral lines and a 661 mg blend of 18 names. None of the 40 is a probiotic. We mention probiotics because shoppers who compare immune products often ask.
What should a probiotic label show?
At minimum: the full strain name, the count at the end of shelf life, and storage directions.
| Look for | Why |
|---|---|
| Genus, species and strain code | Trials are strain-specific |
| CFU count "at expiration" | Counts fall with time |
| Storage (fridge or shelf) | Heat can kill the cultures |
| Allergen and other-ingredient list | Fillers and dairy can matter |
| Named trial for that strain | The claim needs a source |
If a product lists only a total blend weight and a strain list in no order, you cannot tell the real amounts. That is the same problem we describe on the proprietary blend page.
What may an immune claim say, and what may it not say?
A supplement may describe how a nutrient supports a normal body function, with the FDA disclaimer, and it may not claim to treat, cure or prevent a disease.
FDA says structure and function claims need the not evaluated by FDA disclaimer and cannot claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease (FDA, Structure/function claims). The FTC adds that health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally randomized controlled trials (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
So "supports the immune system" is a looser phrase than "prevents colds," and both need evidence. Neither is a promise about herpes. For herpes, the proven care is prescription antivirals, and no supplement has been shown to replace them. Keep taking any antiviral you were prescribed.

See packsWho should ask a clinician before taking a probiotic?
People with weak immune systems, a central line, serious illness or a recent surgery should ask first, as should anyone who is pregnant.
- Bring the bottle or a photo of the label.
- Ask: is this strain studied for my reason?
- Ask: does it fit my medicines and my condition?
- Stop and call if you get fever, severe belly pain or trouble breathing.
Call 911 for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat. See also the pharmacist questions post and the is-it-legit page for how we weigh claims.
FAQ01
Questions about probiotics and immune claims
Does Reviralis contain probiotics?
No. The Supplement Facts lists 22 vitamin and mineral lines and a blend of 18 names, and none is a probiotic. The capsule form is vegetable cellulose. Check the label on your own bottle for the full list.
What does CFU mean on a probiotic label?
CFU means colony-forming units, a count of living organisms. Look for the count at the end of shelf life, not at manufacture. Counts fall over time, especially with heat, so storage matters too.
Can probiotics help with cold sores?
We found no source showing that probiotics change cold sores or herpes outbreaks. Prescription antivirals are the proven care, and a clinician decides. Keep taking any antiviral you were prescribed.
Is a bigger CFU number better?
Not necessarily. Trials tie results to a specific strain and dose, not to the biggest number on a bottle. Ask a pharmacist whether the strain on the label has been studied for what you want.
Who should avoid probiotics?
People with weak immune systems, central lines, serious illness or recent surgery should ask a clinician first. Rare infections have been reported in those groups. Anyone with severe symptoms after starting one should call a clinician.
