Zinc Oxide 10 mg and Selenium 50 mcg in Reviralis: Trace Minerals Explained
Reviralis prints six trace minerals per two capsules: zinc oxide 10 mg, selenium as selenomethionine 50 mcg, chromium polynicotinate 12 mcg, copper gluconate 0.052 mg, manganese chelate 0.4 mg and molybdenum 10 mcg. Zinc and selenium are about 91% of the Daily Value; the rest are small. No source ties any of them to herpes outbreaks.

The six trace minerals01
Which trace minerals are on the Reviralis label?
Six: zinc 10 mg, selenium 50 mcg, chromium 12 mcg, copper 0.052 mg, manganese 0.4 mg and molybdenum 10 mcg, per two capsules.
Zinc and selenium are the two close to a full day's need. The other four are small. Needs and limits come from NIH (NIH ODS, Zinc) (NIH ODS, Selenium).
| Name on the label | Zinc (as Zinc Oxide) 10 mg, 91% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A mineral, as zinc oxide |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 10 mg per 2 capsules, printed (91% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 11 mg (men) or 8 mg (women) a day; the upper limit is 40 mg |
| Upper limit for adults | Upper limit 40 mg |
| Strength of evidence | Essential mineral; zinc lozenges have mixed results for colds; no source shows zinc prevents herpes outbreaks |
| Main caution | Zinc can lower the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and penicillamine. Over 40 mg a day for weeks can lower copper levels (NIH ODS). |
| Name on the label | Selenium (as L-selenomethionine) 50 mcg, 91% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A trace mineral, as L-selenomethionine |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 50 mcg per 2 capsules, printed (91% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 55 mcg a day; the upper limit is 400 mcg |
| Upper limit for adults | Upper limit 400 mcg |
| Strength of evidence | Essential trace mineral; 50 mcg is close to the daily need |
| Main caution | Long-term intakes over 400 mcg can cause hair and nail loss and a garlic breath. 50 mcg is far below that, but other selenium products add up. |
| Name on the label | Copper (as Copper Gluconate) 0.052 mg, 6% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A trace mineral, as copper gluconate |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 0.052 mg (52 mcg) per 2 capsules, printed (6% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 0.9 mg a day; the upper limit is 10 mg |
| Upper limit for adults | Upper limit 10 mg |
| Strength of evidence | Essential trace mineral; 0.052 mg is a small share of the need |
| Main caution | Too much zinc over time can lower copper, so a zinc-heavy routine is one reason some products add a little copper. |
| Name on the label | Manganese (as Manganese Amino Acid Chelate) 0.4 mg, 17% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A trace mineral, as an amino acid chelate |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 0.4 mg per 2 capsules, printed (17% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 2.3 mg (men) or 1.8 mg (women) a day; the upper limit is 11 mg |
| Upper limit for adults | Upper limit 11 mg |
| Strength of evidence | Essential trace mineral; 0.4 mg is a small share of the need |
| Main caution | Chronic high intakes can harm the nervous system, mostly from water or workplace exposure. 0.4 mg is far lower. |
| Name on the label | Chromium (as Chromium Polynicotinate) 12 mcg, 34% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A trace mineral, as chromium polynicotinate |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 12 mcg per 2 capsules, printed (34% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 35 mcg (men) or 25 mcg (women) a day; no upper limit is set |
| Upper limit for adults | No upper limit set |
| Strength of evidence | Essential trace mineral by convention; supplements have not shown reliable benefit in healthy people |
| Main caution | People on diabetes medicine should mention chromium because it may affect blood sugar. 12 mcg is small. |
| Name on the label | Molybdenum (as Molybdenum Amino Acid Chelate) 10 mcg, 22% DV |
|---|---|
| What it is | A trace mineral, as an amino acid chelate |
| Place on the label | Its own line, amount printed |
| Amount per 2 capsules | 10 mcg per 2 capsules, printed (22% of the Daily Value) |
| Daily need or amount used in research | Adults need 45 mcg a day; the upper limit is 2,000 mcg |
| Upper limit for adults | Upper limit 2,000 mcg |
| Strength of evidence | Essential trace mineral; 10 mcg is about a fifth of the need |
| Main caution | Deficiency is almost never seen. 10 mcg is far under the 2,000 mcg limit. |
Zinc02
Is zinc oxide 10 mg a lot for a daily capsule?
No. It covers about a day's need and is a quarter of the 40 mg upper limit.
Adults need 11 mg (men) or 8 mg (women). Zinc can lower the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, so ask about spacing. Weeks above 40 mg a day can lower copper (NIH ODS, Zinc). The only herpes-specific zinc trial we found used a cream, which says nothing about 10 mg of zinc oxide in a capsule.
Selenium03
Is selenium selenomethionine 50 mcg too much?
No: 50 mcg is just under the 55 mcg adult need and one eighth of the 400 mcg limit.
Long-term intakes above 400 mcg can cause hair and nail loss and garlic breath (NIH ODS, Selenium). The risk is stacking, because many multivitamins carry selenium. Add up every source.
The small four04
What do chromium polynicotinate, copper gluconate, manganese chelate and molybdenum add?
Very little each: 34%, 6%, 17% and 22% of the Daily Value.
Chromium has no upper limit, and supplement benefit in healthy people is unproven (NIH ODS, Chromium). Copper at 0.052 mg is far under the 10 mg limit (NIH ODS, Copper). Manganese at 0.4 mg is far under 11 mg, and molybdenum at 10 mcg is far under 2,000 mcg (National Academies, trace-element DRIs). If you take diabetes medicine, mention chromium to your pharmacist.
Keep taking every prescribed medicine, including any antiviral, unless your prescriber says otherwise. See a clinician for a diagnosis, because other conditions look like herpes. Call 911 for trouble breathing, a seizure, chest pain, swelling of the face or throat, or sudden confusion with severe headache and stiff neck.

FAQ07
Questions about zinc, selenium and trace minerals in Reviralis
How much zinc is in Reviralis?
Reviralis prints zinc oxide 10 mg per two capsules, 91% of the Daily Value. That is a quarter of the 40 mg adult upper limit. Adults need 8 to 11 mg a day.
Does zinc in Reviralis help herpes?
No source shows it. The only herpes-specific zinc trial we found used a topical cream, and we found no source showing a supplement prevents or treats outbreaks. Antivirals are the proven care.
Is 50 mcg of selenium too much?
No. The adult need is 55 mcg and the upper limit is 400 mcg, so 50 mcg is about 12% of the limit. Check other products, since selenium adds up across supplements.
What is chromium polynicotinate?
It is chromium bound to niacin. Reviralis prints 12 mcg, 34% of the Daily Value. No upper limit is set, and benefit from supplements in healthy people is unproven.
Can zinc interfere with antibiotics?
Yes, zinc can lower the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics. Ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them.
What does manganese amino acid chelate mean?
It means manganese attached to amino acids, a form used in supplements. Reviralis prints 0.4 mg, 17% of the Daily Value and far under the 11 mg upper limit.
