The Reviralis Proprietary Blend: What Can 661 mg Hold?

Quick answer

The Reviralis proprietary blend is one 661 mg line on the Supplement Facts panel that names 18 ingredients and prints no single amounts. US rules list blend members from most to least by weight, so the order sets a ceiling for each: the first is at least 36.7 mg, and the last is at most 36.7 mg. The real amounts are not printed.

The basics01

What is a proprietary blend in a supplement?

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one name with one total weight, so the maker keeps each amount private.

The rule is that the members are listed in descending order of predominance by weight, and the blend's number is the weight of all of them together (21 CFR 101.36). Nothing requires a maker to print the split. That is legal, and it is also why a shopper cannot tell a useful amount from a sprinkle.

Reviralis has one such blend, 661 mg per two capsules, naming 18 ingredients. The other 22 lines on the panel do print amounts. Think of it as a recipe card that gives the total weight of the sauce and the order of the spices, but no spoonfuls.

The arithmetic02

How much of each ingredient can the 661 mg blend hold?

The first name holds at least 36.7 mg, and the n-th name holds at most 661 divided by n. The chart shows each ceiling.

The logic is simple. If all 18 weighed the same, each would be 36.7 mg (661 divided by 18). The first must weigh at least that much, since nothing is heavier. A name in fifth place cannot weigh more than the average of the top five, so at most 661 divided by 5, or 132.2 mg. The same rule gives 330.5 mg for L-glutamine in second place and 36.7 mg for phosphatidylserine in last place.

Bars are drawn on a 0 to 661 mg scale. Each orange band shows the widest range the label order allows for that name (21 CFR 101.36); the real split is not printed.

These are ceilings, not measured amounts. The real split could leave the last names with very little. The label itself says nothing more.

What does the label order allow for each name?

The ceilings run from 330.5 mg for the second name down to 36.7 mg for the last, and each is the most it could hold.

Blend vs research04

Is the blend enough to match the amounts used in studies?

For the six names we can compare, no. The studied dose is above what the blend's order could hold, even before the other 17 names take their share.

Bacopa memory trials gave about 300 mg a day (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri); the ceiling is 132.2 mg. Phosphatidylserine is usually taken at 100 to 200 mg a day (Cleveland Clinic, Phosphatidylserine); the ceiling is 36.7 mg. Olive leaf trials used 500 to 1,000 mg (MSK About Herbs, Olive Leaf) against a ceiling of 55.1 mg.

Slate bars: the most one daily serving can hold of that name, worked out from the label order (the real amount is not printed). Orange bars: the daily amount used in the study or guideline we found. A studied dose says what was tested, not what works for you, and no study tested Reviralis.

One flag05

Could vanadyl sulfate in the blend pass an upper limit?

The label cannot rule it out, and it cannot show that it happens. Vanadyl sulfate is seventeenth, so it could hold up to 38.9 mg of compound.

About 31% of vanadyl sulfate by weight is vanadium, so at that ceiling the capsule could carry about 12 mg of vanadium. The adult upper limit is 1.8 mg a day (National Academies, trace-element DRIs). If the real amount is a small fraction of the ceiling, there is no issue. The label does not tell us.

Ask for the real amount

Write to the seller's order desk and ask for the milligrams of vanadyl sulfate, licorice root extract and green tea leaf extract per serving. A certificate of analysis for the lot, if one exists, would give those numbers.

Other names carry their own questions: licorice can raise blood pressure and lower potassium (NCCIH, Licorice Root), and boron citrate holds only part boron. The ingredients page covers each name.

Your checklist06

What should you ask before buying a supplement with a blend?

Ask for the amounts, the form of each ingredient and a lab report. A reputable seller can answer in one email.

  • How many milligrams of each blend name are in two capsules?
  • Is the green tea extract caffeinated, and is the licorice deglycyrrhizinated?
  • Is there a lab report for my lot that names the amounts?
  • Does anything here clash with my medicine? The label asks antidepressant, blood thinner and heart or nervous-system medicine users to check first.

Keep taking any medicine you were prescribed, including an antiviral. No source we found shows that the blend changes herpes outbreaks, and the label names no disease. For the full panel, see the supplement facts.

FAQ07

Reviralis proprietary blend questions

Why do supplements use proprietary blends?

Makers say it protects the formula, and the rules allow it. The cost to you is that the amount of each name is hidden. A shopper cannot compare the blend with the dose used in a study or check it against a medicine.

Is the Reviralis proprietary blend 661 mg per capsule?

No. It is 661 mg per serving of two capsules, which is about 330 mg per capsule. The Supplement Facts panel prints the total once for the two-capsule serving, not per capsule.

Which ingredient is the largest in the Reviralis blend?

DMAE bitartrate is listed first, so by label rule it weighs the most, at least 36.7 mg. How much more is not printed. It could hold up to the whole 661 mg minus tiny amounts of the others.

Can the Reviralis blend contain 300 mg of bacopa?

No. Bacopa is fifth of 18, so it can weigh at most 132.2 mg of extract per serving. A common study dose is about 300 mg a day, so the blend cannot reach it from the label order.

Does Reviralis print the amount of green tea extract?

No. It lists green tea leaf extract fourth, which caps it at 165.25 mg, and prints no caffeine or EGCG figure. That is why the sales page's stimulant-free line cannot be checked from the label.

Are proprietary blends illegal?

No. US rules allow them if the members are listed in order and the total is shown (21 CFR 101.36). They are legal, but they hide amounts, so a bottle with one deserves extra questions.
