How to Estimate Blend Ingredient Amounts From Label Order

What rule lets you estimate blend ingredient amounts?
Members of a proprietary blend must be listed in descending order by weight, and the blend total is the weight of all of them together (21 CFR 101.36).
Two facts follow. Nobody in the list can outweigh the names above it. And the blend total is shared among all the names. Put those together and you can set a ceiling for each rank.
Find the blend total (T)

Why does dividing by rank work?
Because everything above a name weighs at least as much as it does. If rank 5 weighed 150 mg, ranks 1 to 4 would each weigh 150 mg or more, and five names would total 750 mg, more than the 661 mg blend.
So rank 5 is held to 661 divided by 5, or 132.2 mg. The same logic gives a floor for the first name: it holds at least T divided by N, or 36.7 mg, since it is the heaviest of 18 that must add up to 661.
A ceiling is the most a name can hold. The real amount can be much lower, and the label does not print it. Use the rule to ask better questions, not to claim what is inside.
