Zinc Supplement Upper Limit: Oxide, Copper Balance and Stacking
The zinc supplement upper limit for adults is 40 mg a day. Reviralis prints zinc oxide 10 mg per two capsules, 91% of the Daily Value and a quarter of that limit. Weeks above 40 mg can lower copper, so the sum of every zinc product matters more than one label.

What is the zinc supplement upper limit?
For adults it is 40 mg a day, counting food and pills together (NIH ODS, Zinc).
Adults need 11 mg (men) or 8 mg (women). Ten mg from the capsules covers most of a day's need on its own, and leaves 30 mg of room. Room disappears fast: a cold lozenge, a zinc-heavy multivitamin and an immune "stack" can each hold 15 to 25 mg.
| Measure | Amount | Share the label line fills |
|---|---|---|
| Label line (2 capsules) | 10 mg, 91% DV | Printed |
| Need, women / men | 8 / 11 mg | 125% / 91% |
| Upper limit | 40 mg | 25% |
Why does too much zinc lower copper?
Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption route, so a long run of high zinc leaves less copper behind (NIH ODS, Zinc).
The same label prints copper as copper gluconate, 0.052 mg, against a 0.9 mg need. That is a zinc-to-copper ratio near 192 to 1. At 10 mg of zinc the ratio is not a worry; NIH ties the problem to weeks above 40 mg. The ratio shows why copper is a line to watch if you add zinc elsewhere. See the copper post.
Is zinc oxide a poor form compared with others?
It dissolves poorly in water, so some studies find it absorbed less well than citrate or gluconate.
The label names the form but not the share that is absorbed, and no source tests this product. So treat 10 mg as the most the line could add, not the amount your body gets. Zinc can also lower the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and penicillamine (NIH ODS, Zinc). Ask your pharmacist about a gap. Keep taking any prescribed medicine, including an antiviral.

Upper limits for adults from NIH ODS and the National Academies: B6 100 mg, zinc 40 mg, selenium 400 mcg, niacin 35 mg (supplements), folic acid 1,000 mcg, magnesium 350 mg from supplements (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) (NIH ODS, Zinc) (NIH ODS, Folate). A checking aid, not medical advice. The 12 mg of B6 on this label is 706% of the Daily Value but about an eighth of the limit.
What should I ask my pharmacist about zinc?
Ask for a check of your total, not of one label.
Is my total zinc under 40 mg? Do my antibiotics need a gap from zinc? Should I watch copper if I use zinc for weeks? No source shows that zinc from a capsule changes herpes outbreaks; antivirals are the proven care.

FAQ01
Reviralis questions people ask
What is the upper limit for zinc?
The adult upper limit is 40 mg a day from food and supplements together, according to NIH. Weeks above it can lower copper. Reviralis prints zinc oxide 10 mg per two capsules, a quarter of that limit.
How much zinc is in Reviralis?
The label prints zinc as zinc oxide, 10 mg per two capsules, or 91% of the Daily Value. Adults need 8 mg (women) or 11 mg (men). The label does not say how much is absorbed.
Can zinc cause a copper deficiency?
Yes, if taken well above the limit for weeks. NIH says excess zinc lowers copper. At 10 mg this is unlikely, but zinc lozenges and multivitamins add up, so count every source.
Does zinc interfere with antibiotics?
It can. NIH says zinc lowers the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and penicillamine. Ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them. Do not skip or change an antibiotic on your own.
Does zinc help herpes outbreaks?
No source shows that a zinc capsule does. We found no source showing a supplement prevents or treats outbreaks. Prescription antivirals are the proven care, and a clinician decides.
