Why minerals and some antibiotics need a time gap

Quick answer

Antibiotics and mineral supplements can bind together in the gut, so less antibiotic reaches the blood. Zinc, magnesium, calcium and iron are the usual ones. Reviralis Complete prints zinc at 10 mg, magnesium at 50 mg, calcium at 20 mg and iron at 1 mg per serving, so ask your pharmacist how long a gap your antibiotic needs.

The basics01

How do minerals weaken some antibiotics?

They bind to the drug in the stomach, a process called chelation, and the bound drug passes through unabsorbed.

Think of a man with a sinus infection who gets a ten-day course of an antibiotic. He keeps his usual multivitamin at breakfast, beside the first dose. If the two bind, he gets less antibiotic than the pharmacy counted on, and the infection may linger.

The effect depends on the drug. NIH notes that zinc lowers the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics (NIH ODS, Zinc), and lists interactions with some antibiotics for magnesium (NIH ODS, Magnesium) and calcium as well. Other antibiotics do not bind at all, so the answer is drug by drug.

On the label02

Which Reviralis mineral lines could matter?

Four printed lines, all at modest amounts.

Mineral lines per serving of two capsules
MineralReviralis labelAdult upper limit
Zinc10 mg40 mg (NIH ODS, Zinc)
Magnesium50 mg350 mg from supplements (NIH ODS, Magnesium)
Calcium20 mg2,000 to 2,500 mg
Iron1 mg45 mg

All four sit well under the limits. A small amount can still bind, since binding depends on the mix in the stomach, not just the total. The label never mentions antibiotics, and no source tested Reviralis with any.

Doses in context03

How long a gap do antibiotics and minerals need?

It depends on the antibiotic, and the pharmacist's label is the rule to follow.

Gaps of a few hours before or after the antibiotic are common for the drugs that bind, and they differ by drug. We will not guess a number for yours. The cheapest fix is a question at the counter: which of my pills bind minerals, and how far apart should they sit?

One more option is to pause the multi-ingredient capsule until the course ends. That is a question for your pharmacist, and the label says to ask a provider before use if you take prescription medicine.

Finish the full course of the antibiotic as prescribed, even if you feel better. Check how your total mineral intake stacks up below.

A checking aid, not medical advice. The 12 mg of B6 on this label is 706% of the Daily Value but about an eighth of the limit.

At the counter04

What should you ask your pharmacist?

Bring every product with a mineral in it, not just the one you think matters.

  • Does my antibiotic bind zinc, magnesium, calcium or iron?
  • How many hours before and after the dose should minerals wait?
  • Do antacids, dairy or calcium-fortified juice count too?
  • Should I skip the supplement until the course is done?

Safety05

When is an antibiotic reaction urgent?

Call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a seizure.

Severe diarrhea, a spreading rash or a fever that returns need a same-day call to your prescriber. The label is not for anyone under 18. Pregnant or nursing readers should ask a provider first. See the side effects page and the Supplement Facts page.

FAQ06

Reviralis questions people ask

Can I take zinc with antibiotics?

Sometimes, with a gap. NIH notes zinc lowers absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, so timing matters for those. Reviralis prints 10 mg of zinc. Ask your pharmacist about your exact antibiotic before taking them together.

Do I need to avoid dairy with antibiotics?

For some antibiotics, yes, because calcium can bind them. Others are fine with dairy. Your pharmacy label usually says which. If it does not, ask the pharmacist, and mention any calcium supplement as well.

Is iron a problem with antibiotics?

It can be, since iron can bind some antibiotics in the gut. The Reviralis label prints only 1 mg, a small amount. Mention it anyway, along with any separate iron product you take.

Should I stop my antibiotic if I take supplements?

No. Finish the course exactly as prescribed. If a supplement may interfere, the fix is a gap or a pause on the supplement, which your pharmacist can plan with you.
