Do zinc lozenges help colds, and what are the side effects?

What do trials say about zinc lozenges and colds?
Oral zinc may shorten a cold by about two days if it is started early, according to NIH, and the results are mixed.
The NIH fact sheet on zinc says oral zinc, taken as lozenges or syrup, may shorten the length of cold symptoms by about two days (NIH ODS, Zinc). It does not say zinc prevents colds, and it does not link oral zinc to herpes. Trials differ in dose, form and start time, so there is no single recipe to copy.
For herpes, the one zinc trial in our notes used a cream on the skin, in 46 people, and it did not test lozenges or capsules (Godfrey 2001, Topical Zinc Oxide/Glycine for Cold Sores (Altern Ther Health Med)). No source we found shows that Reviralis or its zinc changes outbreaks.
What side effects do zinc lozenges cause?
The usual complaints are nausea, a metallic taste and mouth irritation.

Heavy zinc use over time can lower copper, per NIH (NIH ODS, Zinc). Zinc also lowers absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, so a pharmacist should check timing with those medicines.

How do you count zinc from lozenges plus a capsule?
Add up every product, because the 40 mg upper limit counts all sources together.
